We flew Royal Silk class on a Thai Airways International Boeing 747-400 aircraft from Sydney to Bangkok. Royal Silk is Thai’s branding for business class service.
Virgin Australia operate a single daily flight between Perth and Darwin. Serviced with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the flight departs Perth at 8:40am for arrival into Darwin at 1:45pm – as flight VA1433. From Autumn to Spring, Virgin Australia also add an afternoon service operating on Saturdays and Sundays.
For the second year in a row, Qantas have offered direct, seasonal flights between Auckland and Perth. Despite the fact that they only run on Saturday/Sunday, the service is welcome competition to Air New Zealand’s non-stop monopoly on this route. Qantas made the hard to understand decision to discontinue all regular international services from Perth on May 12th last year, so from December 5th-April 26th this is Qantas’ only international service to or from Perth.
Air New Zealand operate the only non-stop flights between the North American mainland and New Zealand. Its flagship product is marketed as Business Premier, which the airline’s website calls ‘utter luxury’.
The world’s largest commercial airliner has been a boon for major airlines hoping to get maximum traffic through the United Kingdom’s busiest airport. On 14 October 2014, Qatar Airways started flying their first Airbus A380 aircraft on its popular Doha – London Heathrow route. Qatar have only ordered 10 of these ‘Superjumbos’ which mean they will only be operated on Qatar’s busiest routes (compare for example, Emirates’ approach of operating them nearly anywhere they can).
LAN operate a daily Sydney-Auckland-Santiago service. LAN have ‘fifth freedom’ rights to sell tickets purely on the Sydney-Auckland-Sydney service, a welcome option for oneworld flyers otherwise stuck with the miniature seats on Boeing 737-800 services that Qantas pass off as business class (even though they closely resemble the seats Qantas offer as premium economy on their Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 fleet) that ply trans-Tasman routes.
